About the State Superintendent of Schools

Michele L. Blatt is the 34th State Superintendent of Schools in West Virginia. In this role, she provides organizational leadership to ensure the effective implementation of the West Virginia Department of Education’s (WVDE) strategies and goals.

Superintendent Blatt has enjoyed a distinguished career in education with more than 25 years of experience as a teacher, principal, and facilitator. Since joining the WVDE full-time as a Leadership Development Coordinator in 2007, she has earned promotions through the roles of Executive Director of the Office of School Improvement, Chief Accountability Officer, Assistant Superintendent for the Division of Support and Accountability, and Deputy State Superintendent. Her professional focus has centered on turning around low-performing schools and providing a variety of strategies, tools, and resources to meet the individual needs of students.

She has built relationships across the state having served as the liaison between the WVDE and state legislators, county superintendents, and leaders of various organizations and associations. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Superintendent Blatt served on the state’s Joint Interagency Taskforce which guided West Virginia through the shutdown and transition to re-open schools and other major operations. Her involvement was key in ensuring schools, educators, and students had access to meals, resources, vaccines, and materials throughout the crisis.

Superintendent Blatt’s devotion to supporting every child’s well-being and success has been a guiding motivation throughout her career and is a priority in her professional, charitable, and personal pursuits.
