Employee Compensation and Total Rewards

Total Compensation
Professional and Associate staff members are paid in accordance with requirements set forth in WV Code. Factors including job classification, education, and experience are all considered in determining annual salary.
In addition to an annual salary, staff members receive indirect compensation through employer-provided benefits including, but not limited to, the following:

Total Compensation can be calculated by adding approximately 35% to your annual salary.
Retirement
All regular, full time employees are required to participate in the Teachers’ Retirement System (Defined Benefit Pension Plan). New members contribute 6%, employer contributes 7.5%. For more information, visit the WV Consolidated Public Retirement Board website.
The WV Retirement Plus offers an additional opportunity for participants to make pre-tax contributions to retirement. For more information visit the West Virginia Retirement Plus website.
Health and Life Insurance
The WVDE provides affordable health and life insurance options for all regular, full time employees through the Public Employees Insurance Agency (PEIA). Paid Time Off
The WVDE provides a leave package for all full time, regular employees including paid time off for accrued sick/annual leave, paid time off for jury duty, and a minimum of 12 paid holidays.
Full time, regular employees receive 5.20 hours of sick leave per pay period.
Full time, regular employees accrue annual leave based on verified work experience at a county board of education or state agency. Accrual rates are based on the schedule below.

Educational Reimbursement
The WVDE seeks to support educational efforts that will contribute to the Department of Education’s future success and the professional growth of its employees. Eligibility is based on meeting program requirements, availability of funds, and at the discretion of the State Superintendent.
