Professional Teaching Certificate (Conversion)
Summary of Requirements
If you hold a Provisional Teaching Certificate, use Form 20C to convert it to a Professional Teaching Certificate.
This certificate is valid for three (3) years.
Full Requirements
Use this form only if you currently hold a West Virginia Provisional Teaching Certificate and have completed all requirements for an Initial Professional Administrative Certificate.
Candidate Requirements
To apply, you must:
- Be a U.S. citizen or hold eligible documentation (see WVBE Policy 5202).
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Be physically, mentally, and emotionally qualified.
- Be employed in a West Virginia public school district.
- Have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 3.0.
- Have recommendation from the county Superintendent.
- Have successfully completed a beginning educator internship for classroom teachers or qualify for West Virginia Board of Education Policy exemption.
- Have two years of full-time teaching experience in West Virginia under the Provisional Teaching Certificate in one or more areas of endorsement on the certificate.
- Have successful evaluations for each year taught under the Provisional Certificate within the West Virginia Educator Evaluation System with an earned performance rating of emerging or above.
- Have dine one of the following:
- Option One: Six (6) semester hours of college or university coursework reflecting the minimum of 3.0 GPA, as applicable, related to the public school program as defined in West Virginia Board of Education Policy 5202.
- This must be completed subsequent to the issuance of the initial Provisional Professional Certificate to be converted and within the last five (5) years.
- Option Two: Successful completion of Department e-learning coursework related to the public school program as defined in West Virginia Board of Education Policy 5202.
- This must be completed subsequent to the issuance of the initial Provisional Professional Certificate to be converted and within the last five (5) years.
- Option One: Six (6) semester hours of college or university coursework reflecting the minimum of 3.0 GPA, as applicable, related to the public school program as defined in West Virginia Board of Education Policy 5202.
To send official transcripts to our office, please have your college or university email them to cert.transcripts.wvde@k12.wv.us. Transcripts must be received from the college or university, and not the applicant.
Application Instructions
- Download the Conversion from a Provisional to a Professional Teaching Certificate form and fill out the required information. You will need to verify your conversion requirements.
- Pay the processing fee online before submitting your form.
- Submit your application to your employer. Your application must be uploaded by your employer’s human resources office.
