Paraprofessional Educational Interpreter Certificate

Summary of Requirements

The Paraprofessional Educational Interpreter Certificate allows you to serve in a support capacity including, but not limited to, facilitating the instruction and direct or indirect supervision of pupils who require sign language interpreter services under the supervision of a professional educator.

Full Requirements

Initial

Validity Period: 1 year (Renewable twice for a total of 3 years)

General Requirements: To apply, you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or hold eligible documentation (see WVBE Policy 5202).
  • Must pass the state aide competency test.
  • Must complete 36 semester hours of coursework from an accredited college or university, or WV Learns coursework, as specified in Policy 5202, 
    • Must provide proof of credential or testing. 

Education Level: High School Diploma.

Credential: NAD certification Level III, RID certification, or NIC certification will substitute for EIPA testing.

Testing: EIPA testing as outlined in Policy 5202.

Employment Required: Yes.

Official Recommendation: County Superintendent.

Renewal

Validity Period: 1 year (Renewable twice for a total of 3 years)

Coursework/Training: Must have completed 15 clock hours of interpreter training each year.

Testing: EIPA testing as outlined in Policy 5202.

Official Recommendation: County Superintendent.
