Crisis Response Planning

School counselors play an important role in violence response and prevention. A comprehensive school counseling program supports school safety by giving counselors resources and training to support students and make referrals as-needed.

Counselors are familiar with both the school community and external mental health resources. This allows them to respond effectively when concerns arise or an incident occurs.

Each school should have a prevention-based approach to individual and school-wide crisis scenarios. Counselors play a lead role in developing this crisis response plan. This includes defining responsibilities, and providing education on preparedness, prevention, and intervention.
